HOPS Playground Discussion - December 2
The Youth and Recreation Commission will hold a public discussion concerning the HOPS Playground on Monday, December 2 at 7pm in the Great Hall, on the 2nd floor of the Halifax Town Hall, 499 Plymouth Street. The discussion will center on possible plans for new structures and equipment on the Playground and any fundraising that will be necessary to cover the costs of the project. The public is invited to attend and participate.

During the last several years, because of the age of the playground equipment at the HOPS playground, located next to the Holmes Public Library on Plymouth Street/Route 106, the Town of Halifax has been in the process of repairing some pieces of equipment and removing others. However, during the last few months, there has been a spate of injuries and evidence that the large structure in the center and the gazebo that is also located in the playground area were reaching the point that small repairs would not be sufficient to maintain them in good condition. The Board of Selectmen had been notified about the problems earlier this fall and met with Dick Steele, the Youth and Recreation Director on Tuesday night, November 12. The Board concluded that removal of the structure, as soon as possible, was in the best interests of the Town and for the safety of the users of the playground.

At that meeting, Mr. Steele provided the Board with some possible plans and layouts for a new central structure. While there is money available in the Youth and Recreation's gift account to help fund the replacement, additional money will be needed via fundraising and/or through an appropriation at a town meeting. Funding is also needed to replace the stone chips in the center of the site with wood chips. The amount needed will be dependent on the final choices made as to the size, scope and materials for the new equipment. Those interested can view drawings of some of the possibilities at the Holmes Public Library. Anyone who needs more information about this project can call the Selectmen's Office at 781-294-1316.
