Proposed Sale of Town-Owned Land - Elm Street
In 2002, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, through the Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, purchased the Northland Cranberry Company’s parcel located in Hanson and Halifax. Because the land had been taxed under Massachusetts General Law Chapter 61A which allows for lower valuations due to agricultural use, Hanson and Halifax settled back tax issues with the Commonwealth through payments to the towns and a transfer of land. The land that Halifax received is a 17.65 acre parcel located off Elm Street bordering the southwest portion of the Northland property (now the Burrage Pond Wildlife Refuge). The Commonwealth has said that it would like to purchase the property from the Town in order to add it to the Burrage Pond property. The purchase price would be up to $250,000, depending on a land appraisal. The Board of Selectmen is accepting comments from the public until Tuesday, March 13 about the proposed sale. Interested parties can send comments to the Board of Selectmen, 499 Plymouth Street, Halifax, MA 02338, call the Selectmen’s Office at 781-294-1316, or e-mail the Board c/o the Town Administrator at - A map of the parcel is available.
